Marvel at the frozen Lower and Upper Falls — a spectacular winter transformation
Extraordinary icicle formations reaching several metres in height

Optional free time in Banff's charming winter townscape
When winter arrives in Banff, it doesn't close the national park — it transforms it. Johnston Canyon, a breathtaking gorge of rushing water and carved limestone in the summer months, becomes something else entirely in the depths of winter: a frozen, silent, glittering world of towering icicles, ice-sculpted waterfalls, and cathedral-like stillness that you will not find anywhere else in Canada.
Johnston Canyon Icewalk
~2–3 hours
Johnston Canyon in winter is one of the most visually extraordinary experiences the Canadian Rockies have to offer. The steel catwalks that carry visitors through the gorge during summer now pass through a world of shimmering, sculpted ice — the canyon walls glistening with frost, the usual sound of rushing water replaced by an almost sacred silence, and the frozen falls rising in formations of genuinely breathtaking scale. The walk to the Lower Falls takes approximately 20 minutes; the Upper Falls add another 30. Both are unmissable.
Banff Townsite (Optional)
~1–1.5 hours
After the drama of the canyon, Banff's winter townscape offers a warm and charming contrast. Browse the boutique shops along Banff Avenue, find a cozy café for a hot drink and a well-deserved lunch, or simply stroll the streets and soak in the mountain-town atmosphere in its most atmospheric season. Your guide is happy to recommend spots to suit your group.
Bow Falls & Surprise Corner (Optional)
Flexible
Banff's most iconic viewpoints take on an entirely different character in winter. Bow Falls partially freezes into dramatic sculptural formations, and Surprise Corner frames the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel against a backdrop of snow-covered peaks and winter light that no summer photograph can rival. Both are beautiful, quiet, and well worth the short detour before your return to Calgary.
