Most travellers to Alberta head straight for Banff — and while the Rockies are spectacular, they're only part of the story. South of Calgary, where the open Canadian prairies come to an abrupt and dramatic end against the wall of the Rocky Mountains, lies Waterton Lakes National Park: a UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary natural beauty that most visitors to the province never discover.

Bar U Ranch National Historic Site
Drive-By
Kick off your journey south with a scenic drive-by of one of Canada's most celebrated working ranches. Dating back to the 1880s, Bar U Ranch played a defining role in shaping Alberta's cowboy heritage and the ranching culture of the Canadian West. Admire the original heritage buildings framed against rolling foothills as your guide shares the remarkable stories of the Canadian ranching era.

Lundbreck Falls
~45 minutes
Your first major stop brings you face-to-face with the raw power of a 12-metre waterfall as it thunders into a rocky canyon below. It's the perfect place to stretch your legs, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and capture some spectacular early photographs. The easy walking path to the viewpoint is accessible for all fitness levels, and the falls are dramatic at any time of year.

Red Rock Canyon
~45 minutes
Few places in Canada offer a visual spectacle quite like Red Rock Canyon. Thousands of years of erosion have carved a vivid tapestry of red and green rock layers into this striking gorge — the result of ancient iron-rich sediment and mineral deposits laid down over hundreds of millions of years. Stroll the easy walking path along the canyon walls and let the geology tell its ancient, colourful story.

Bison Paddock Loop Road
~30 minutes
Drive through a protected habitat where one of North America's most iconic animals roams freely. There's something genuinely humbling about watching a bison herd up close — a living reminder of the wild, untamed heart of the Canadian prairies. Your guide will share the conservation story behind the herd and the importance of Waterton in preserving this legendary species.

Waterton–Glacier International Peace Park Lookout
~20 minutes
Stand at one of the most unique geographic intersections in Canada, where the endless prairies abruptly give way to the soaring peaks of the Rocky Mountains. This is a viewpoint that photographs simply cannot do justice — you have to experience the sheer drama of the collision between two worlds in person to fully appreciate it.

Waterton Lakes Townsite
~1.5 hours (Free Time)
Enjoy free time in the heart of Waterton Lakes National Park. Stroll along the shimmering lakeshore, browse the local shops, or sit down for a well-deserved lunch at one of the townsite's charming restaurants. The lakeside setting, with Upper Waterton Lake stretching south toward the United States border, is one of the most peaceful and beautiful lunch spots in western Canada. Your guide can recommend local favourites to suit your taste.

Prince of Wales Hotel Viewpoint
~30 minutes
No visit to Waterton is complete without seeing the Prince of Wales Hotel — a National Historic Site and one of the most photographed landmarks in the entire Canadian Rockies. Built in 1927 for the Great Northern Railway, this grand chateau-style hotel sits high above Upper Waterton Lake with views that stretch across the water and into Glacier National Park in Montana. A moment of pure, historic grandeur.

Cameron Falls
~30 minutes
End your day on a peaceful and poetic note at Cameron Falls, where clear mountain water cascades over ancient pink argillite rock — some of the oldest exposed rock in the Canadian Rockies, estimated at over 1.5 billion years old. Easily accessible and absolutely beautiful, it's the perfect final chapter to your Waterton adventure.
